FOG
Manipulation & Control Tactics

FOG

Fear, Obligation, Guilt. The primary emotions that drive the control tactics of emotionally immature people.

Coined by Susan Forward in her book Emotional Blackmail, FOG represents the three levers of emotional manipulation: Fear, Obligation, and Guilt. Emotionally immature people (EIPs) are experts at leveraging these feelings to bypass your boundaries, force compliance, and keep you tethered to their demands. When you are lost in the FOG, it is extremely difficult to see the manipulation clearly, and you feel compelled to act against your own interests to soothe the EIP's anxiety.

The Three Components of FOG

  1. Fear: The underlying dread of the parent's anger, silent treatment, emotional volatility, or threats of abandonment. You tread lightly on eggshells because you know any deviation from their expectations triggers a crisis.
  2. Obligation: The societal or family narrative that you owe your parents your entire life, happiness, and compliance because they raised you. This plays on the belief that children must sacrifice their own well-being for their parents.
  3. Guilt: The automatic feeling that you are a "bad" child, selfish, or ungrateful if you choose your own needs over theirs. EIPs induce guilt by casting themselves as victims who have suffered deeply because of your autonomy.

But the most significant thing about FOG is that it is a tool of control. FOG is not just an emotional reaction; it is a form of manipulation used by emotionally immature people to control the people around them. It is a way to keep people trapped in unhealthy relationships. When people are afraid, obligated, or guilty, they are less likely to leave abusive or unhealthy relationships.

Kim's Thoughts

" The concept of FOG helped me personally to evaluate exactly those bonds that I thought were strong, but didn't bring me joy or happiness. It allowed me to see the toxicity that was present in my life and to make the hard decision to cut those bonds off for my own mental health. I don't meet people anymore that induce fear or guilt in me."
