An Unspoken Relationship Contract is a set of silent, unilateral, and completely unwritten expectations that emotionally immature people (EIPs) impose on their children, partners, and friends. These contracts are never openly discussed, negotiated, or agreed upon. If these rules were written down on paper, their extreme unfairness and absurdity would be immediately obvious. Instead, they operate in the background, enforced through emotional conditioning, guilt, and behavioral backlash.
The Hidden Clauses of the EIP Contract
When dealing with an emotionally immature person, you are treated as having signed a contract containing the following unwritten clauses:
- "I agree that your needs should come before anyone else's."
- "I agree to not speak my mind when I'm around you."
- "Please say anything you want and I won't object."
- "Yes, I'm probably wrong or ignorant if I think differently from you."
- "Of course you should be upset if anyone says no to you."
- "Please tell me what I should like or dislike."
- "Yes, it makes total sense for you to decide how much time I should (want) to spend with you."
- "Yes, you're right, I should show you respect by disowning my own thoughts in your presence."
- "Of course you shouldn't exercise self-control if you don't feel like it."
- "It's absolutely fine if you don't think before you speak."
- "It's true, you should never have to wait or be forced to deal with unpleasant things."
- "It's true, you shouldn't have to adjust when circumstances change around you."
- "It's ok if you ignore me. Or snap at me. Or don't act glad to see me. I still want to spend time with you."
- "Of course you can be rude to me, you must have a reason."
- "I agree that other people can't tell you what to do!"
- "Please talk as long as you like, about your favorite topics & never ask questions about myself, please."
The Enforcement of the Contract
Because you never actually consented to these terms, the EIP must rely on emotional blackmail (Fear, Obligation, and Guilt) to enforce them. The moment you break a clause—for example, by stating your own opinion, saying "no" to a visit, or objecting to a rude comment—the EIP will react with intense shock, anger, or deep hurt. They behave as though you have committed a malicious breach of trust, leaving you feeling confused, defensive, and deeply guilty.
Tearing Up the Unilateral Agreement
Healing from EIP systems requires the conscious act of tearing up these unspoken contracts and reclaiming your sovereignty:
- Recognize the Contract: Write down the specific unwritten rules your parent expects you to follow. Exposing them to the light of day instantly strips them of their power.
- Decline the Terms: Understand that a contract signed under emotional coercion is not legally or morally binding. You have every right to renegotiate or walk away.
- Behavioral Breach: Start consciously breaking the clauses. State your thoughts, hold your boundaries, refuse to over-function, and let the EIP experience the discomfort of your equality.
- Tolerate the Backlash: When you tear up the contract, the EIP will likely escalate their manipulation or accuse you of being cold and ungrateful. Stay firm in your center, knowing that their reaction is a natural response to their lost control.
