Parentification
The Origins: Family Dynamics

Parentification

When a child is forced to take on the responsibilities of an adult, acting as the caregiver to their own parent or siblings.

Parentification occurs when the natural parent-child dynamic is inverted. The child sacrifices their own developmental needs (play, safety, reliance on adults) to stabilize a chaotic or emotionally absent parent. This leads to hyper-independence and severe burnout in adulthood.
